we are what surrounds us
After a feeble albeit successful attempt at my 200-words personal reflection for the one and only arts gem i am taking and will ever take in NUS, i am quite shocked at the discovery that it took me so long (read: 2 hours) just to write a 200-words essay... ok make that paragraph haha.. apparently it wasn't because i had nothing to write, it was more because i had trouble finding words to express my ideas accurately and adequately on paper in proper English.
And i remember how i used to be able to churn out 4 page long economics essays in half hour slots.... now i can't even write properly in proper English.... see my poor vocab? hahaha..
Anyway i received a sweet surprise from the mailbox just now. it's from my pen-pal who is actually one of my best friends back in primary school. she's been away for exchange in Shanghai and she revealed how she felt that her English standard had dropped having being immersed in there for the past few months....
Which brings me to the point of how easily people are influenced by their surroundings, don't you think so? when i started studying engineering and ever since answers that came out from me started to become equations and formulae, i feel that at the same time i was starting to lose my ability in English writing.... haiz... i guess it's inevitable to be influenced by what surrounds you.
Maybe the same goes for speaking in Singlish. Try as i might, i can never eliminate the "lar"s and "lor"s in the sentences i say although i only consciously try to do that during tuition lessons i give. No wonder the chinese saying goes "jin4 zhu1 zhe3 chi4, jin4 mo4 zhe3 hei1" which basically means go near a red object and one will turn red, go near a black object and one will turn black.
So it's not a bad idea to blog once in a while.. at least i'm practising my English writing here haha...
